January 1, 1970

The 23rd annual Tangerine Bowl was a thriller in which the offenses never stopped scoring until the final seconds.

Richmond withstood a late Ohio rally to win, 49-42, handing the undefeated Bobcats their first loss of the season. Richmond QB Buster O’Brien established four Bowl records – passes (58), completions (39), yards (447) and touchdowns (5 – 4 pass, 1 rush). Receiver Walker Gillette was the main beneficiary of O’Brien’s record-setting performance with two records of his own – receptions (20) and receiving yards (242).

Ohio QB Cleve Bryant, who was 17-of-33 for 223 yards, matched O’Brien’s touchdown output — throwing for four and rushing for one.

The combined scoring efforts of both teams left their names atop the record book for most combined points in a game (91).
