January 1, 1987
Auburn’s stingy defense and the running of Brent Fullwood were enough for the Tigers to post a 16-7 win over USC.
The game marked the bowl’s return to New Year’s Day for the first time since the 14th Tangerine Bowl in 1960.
Aundray Bruce led the Tiger defense with three sacks, five tackles and was named MVP. Fullwood rushed for 152 yards and a touchdown. The Trojans’ only score came on an interception return by All-America linebacker Marcus Cotton.
The game marked the first time the bowl was broadcast by ABC Sports.
