January 1, 1996

The 50th annual Citrus Bowl proved to be the best bowl game in college football’s New Year’s Day lineup.

Ohio State was riding the shoulders of Heisman Trophy winner Eddie George and the Volunteers were led by one of the nation’s premier quarterbacks in Peyton Manning. While the offensive stars were touted going into the contest, it was defense and special teams that proved to be the difference.

A goal-line stand in the second quarter by Tennessee was the key series in the game. Trailing 7-0, the Vols defense denied Eddie George and the Buckeyes and took over on downs. Volunteers’ unheralded RB Jay Graham overshadowed George, running for 154 yards on 26 carries, including a 69-yard TD score just before halftime. George did manage to get in the end zone once and finished the day with 107 yards.

Vols freshman kicker Jeff Hall drilled two fourth-quarter field goals to provide the difference in scoring.
