The 1997 game showcased the tremendous talent of Tennessee junior QB Peyton Manning.
Manning dissected Northwestern’s defense en route to one of the best individual performances in the history of the bowl. Manning tied a bowl record with five touchdowns (4 passing, 1 rushing) and became only the second QB in bowl history to pass for over 400 yards, finishing the day with 408 yards.
Northwestern junior RB Darnell Autry, who announced he would turn pro following the game, was the lone star performer for the ‘Cats. Autry rushed for two touchdowns and helped the Wildcats fight back from a 21-0 deficit to tie the score on a 28-yard scamper with just two minutes remaining in the half.
UT wideout Joey Kent became the first player to record over 100 yards receiving in two Citrus Bowl games, as he finished the contest with a game-high 122 yards on five receptions.
