Kentucky stays undefeated with upset of Mississippi State

Two weeks after ending a 31-year losing streak to Florida, Kentucky pulled off yet another upset, topping No. 14 Mississippi State 28-7 in Lexington on Saturday. With the win, the Wildcats improved to 4-0 for the first time since 2008 and entered the AP Top 25 for the first time since 2007, checking in at No. 17 in the latest poll.

In the ACC, 4-0 Duke also joined the Top 25 at No. 22, marking the first time that Duke and Kentucky have been ranked in the AP football poll at the same time since September 14, 1957. In that time span, the two schools have been ranked in the same AP basketball poll 547 times.

On Saturday, the Wildcats defense held the Bulldogs to just 200 total yards, including just 56 yards on the ground — the fewest by a ranked opponent since the Wildcats held Louisville to 55 rushing yards in 2002. Running back Blake Snell Jr. ran for 165 yards and four touchdowns for the ‘Cats, who have now beaten consecutive ranked opponents for the first time since 1977.

Kentucky will look to stay undefeated when they host South Carolina next weekend. The Bulldogs will look to bounce back next week against Florida.

Wisconsin rebounded from its Week 3 loss with an impressive win over Iowa.

Wisconsin’s big fourth quarter helps deliver win over Iowa

Wisconsin bounced back from its upset loss to BYU with a 28-17 win over Iowa on Saturday, the Badgers’ third straight victory in the Heartland Trophy series. In each of the past four years, the winner of the Wisconsin-Iowa game has gone on to represent in the Big Ten West in the conference championship game.

On Saturday, Badgers quarterback Alex Hornibrook threw for three touchdowns, including a 17-yard strike to A.J. Taylor to give Wisconsin the lead with 57 seconds left in the fourth quarter. After a Wisconsin interception, fullback Alec Ingold scored on a 33-yard run to seal the victory. Led by Jonathan Taylor (25 carries, 113 yards), the Badgers rushed for 210 total yards on 4.8 yards per carry against a Hawkeyes defense that allowed just 126 total rushing yards and 1.54 yards per carry over the first three games, the No. 2 and 3 marks in the FBS, respectively.

The Badgers have a bye next week before facing a Nebraska team still looking for its first win under new head coach Scott Frost. The Hawkeyes will also have a week off before hosting Minnesota.

Florida picks up first SEC win at Tennessee

Florida quarterback Felipe Franks threw touchdown passes to three different receivers and ran for a fourth while the Gators defense forced six total turnovers as the Gators rolled to a 47-21 victory over Tennessee.

With the victory, Florida is now 13-1 in its last 14 meetings with the Fols. The Gators also posted the program’s highest point total ever at Neyland Stadium, topping a 43-30 victory in 1984. The 26-point win was also Florida’s third-largest margin of victory in the series, behind only a 59-20 win in Gainesville in 2007 and a 31-0 win in Knoxville in 1994

Tennessee has now lost its last 10 games against Power Five opponents since beating Georgia Tech in overtime to open the 2017 season. The task of ending that streak won’t get any easier over the next month as Tennessee visits No. 2 Georgia next week, followed by a post-bye trip to No. 10 Auburn and a home tilt against No. 1 Alabama.

The Gators, meanwhile, will look to improve to 2-1 in SEC play when they head to Starkville to face Mississippi State this weekend.

Purdue earns first win with upset of Boston College

After losing its first three games by a combined eight points, Purdue finally got in the win column Saturday with 30-13 home victory over No. 23 Boston College. The win marked the Boilermakers’ first win over over a ranked opponent since their 2011 win over then-No. 23 Illinois and the 17-point margin over victory was Purdue’s largest over a ranked foe since a 24-point win over No. 5 Michigan State in 1999.

Boilermakers quarterback David Blough completed 21 of his 28 pass attempts on Saturday for 296 yards and Rondale Moore hauled in eight passes for 110 yards and two touchdowns, including a career-long 70-yard score to put Purdue up 13-7 in the second quarter. Moore, a freshman, has now reached the 100-yard mark in three of four games this season and has recorded a play of 40 or more yards in every game of his college career.

Defensively, Purdue held Boston College’s potent rush offense to a season-low 85 yards; the Eagles entered the game averaging 285.7 yards per game on the ground. The Boilers will look to keep the momentum rolling next week when they head to Lincoln to face a Nebraska team in search of its first win. Boston College will host Temple at noon on Saturday.
