CFP Poll Week 3: What it means for the VRBO Citrus Bowl

Over at FloridaCitrusSports.com, we broke down the Nov. 6 College Football Playoff poll and what it could mean for the Camping World Bowl and VRBO Citrus Bowl this postseason.

As it relates to our SEC-Big Ten matchup specifically, it’s impossible to project anything with certainty right now, but the rankings give us a decent idea who could be available in our pick window.

Starting on New Year’s Day, the VRBO Citrus Bowl gets the first pick from both the SEC and Big Ten after the New Year’s Six bowls, and right now, No. 14 Penn State and No. 21 Northwestern are the two highest-ranked Big Ten teams outside that CFP window. (Michigan State and Iowa each fell out of the rankings this week after losing to Ohio State and Northwestern, respectively, over the weekend.)

Both the Nittany Lions and Wildcats will be on the road this weekend, with Penn State visiting Rutgers and Northwestern traveling to face Minnesota. The Hawkeyes and Spartans, meanwhile, will look to get back on track — and back in the poll — during road trips to Illinois and Nebraska, respectively.

Shifting to the SEC, No. 13 Florida currently represents the conference’s highest-ranked team outside the CFP series, with Kentucky following at No. 17. From the West division, Mississippi State dropped five spots to No. 21 after being shut out by Alabama last week.

The Gators have already completed conference play and close the season with a home game against Idaho and a visit to Tallahassee for their annual rivalry matchup with Florida State. Kentucky has also concluded its SEC slate and closes with Middle Tennessee and a trip to Louisville. Mississippi State still has Arkansas and Ole Miss left to play.
