CFP Poll Week 5: What it means for the VRBO Citrus Bowl

With just a few days left before Selection Sunday, the College Football Playoff released its penultimate Top 25 poll Tuesday night.

Over at FloridaCitrusSports.com, we broke down the Nov. 27 College Football Playoff poll and what it could mean for the Camping World Bowl and VRBO Citrus Bowl this postseason.

As it relates to our SEC-Big Ten matchup specifically, it’s impossible to project anything with certainty right now, but the rankings give us a decent idea who could be available in our pick window come the weekend.

Starting on New Year’s Day, the VRBO Citrus Bowl gets the first pick from both the SEC and Big Ten after the New Year’s Six bowls. Right now, No. 15 Kentucky, No. 18 Mississippi State and No. 19 Texas A&M are the three highest-ranked SEC teams outside the CFP series of bowls and all three teams are idle this week, with the latter coming off a record-breaking shootout win over current No. 10 LSU.

In the Big Ten, No. 21 Northwestern is currently the only ranked team outside the Top 12, however, a win over the Buckeyes in Indianapolis would vault the Wildcats into the Rose Bowl, while a loss could drop them out of the Top 25 altogether.

(A Northwestern victory could also make Penn State available, even at No. 12, so long as a losing Ohio State team stayed ranked above the Nittany Lions. Looking at the other conference championship matchups, a win by No. 14 Texas over No. 5 Oklahoma in the Big 12 could also take away an at-large bid that would otherwise go to Penn State, as the rankings currently stand.)
