Dawgs In The Sunshine State: A Bowl History

If history counts for anything, Georgia just may be the favorite to take home the Capital One bowl title this year. After all, the Dawgs have done it before.

The Dawgs are 10-4-2 all time in bowl games played in the State of Florida, dating all the way back to Georgia’s first bowl game ever, the Orange Bowl against TCU in 1942; Georgia won that game 40-26.

Georgia is 4-1 in the last five bowl games in Florida and posted wins over Wisconsin, Michigan State and Purdue. In the last four bowl appearances Georgia has made in the Citrus Bowl, the Dawgs are 3-1-1.

The Dawgs are 3-1-1 all time in Orlando, FL bowl games. Georgia tied Florida State in 1984 and lost the Tangerine bowl to Miami of Ohio in 1974 but posted wins over Michigan State in 2009, Purdue in 2004 and Ohio State in 1993, making Georgia 3-0 all time against Big Ten teams in an Orlando bowl matchup.

Georgia is 8-4 all time against teams from the Big Ten. The Dawgs are 7-1 all time against the Big Ten when the game is played in Florida, the sole loss coming last year in the Outback Bowl against Michigan State.

However, Georgia is 0-1 against Nebraska, the lone matchup coming in the 1969 Sun Bowl in El Paso,TX. Nebraska won the matchup 45-6.

The Bulldogs will be making their 16th consecutive bowl appearance, and Georgia ranks as one of the top-five bowl teams of all time in wins and appearances. The Bulldogs are 26-18-3 all-time in bowl games.

Notes:

Georgia practiced Wednesday afternoon in full pads for two hours in preparation for the Capital One Bowl.

“It wasn’t quite what we’ve been getting,” head coach Mark Richt said about Wednesday’s practice.“The bottom line is I thought we got real sloppy today. It was not very good, but we’ll be back out here tomorrow morning.”

The Bulldogs will practice Thursday and Friday before they leave for Christmas. The team will meet in Orlando on Dec. 26 in preparation for the Capital One Bowl on New Year’s Day.

Kickoff for the Capital One Bowl is set for 1:08 p.m. and will be televised on ABC.
