In the inaugural Tangerine Bowl, 10,000 fans gathered at Tangerine Bowl Stadium on New Year’s Day to watch the Catawba Indians defeat the previously undefeated Maryville Scots 31-6.
After a scoreless first quarter, Catawba pounded the Maryville defense in the second, going up 18-0 in the first half. Fullback Tony Georgiano opened the scoring efforts for Catawba with a rush from the goal line, followed by two more from Tailback Harold Bowen, a pick-six and a lateral from fullback Tony Georgiano. Bowen threw for two more scores in the second half, one to Don Hanley and the final to Bill Greene.
Scots tailback Bill Spears crossed the goal line for Maryville’s only score late in the fourth quarter.
It was the defensive effort from Catawba’s Ray Yagiello that led him to be the first Tangerine Bowl MVP after aiding the Indians’ defense in holding the Scots to just 40 yards on the ground, 23 coming from their lone scoring drive in the fourth quarter.
