In their second appearance in the second-annual Tangerine Bowl, the 10-1 Catawba Indians defeated a 9-2 Marshall Thundering Herd 7-0 at Tangerine Bowl Stadium, becoming the first team to record a shutout in the game’s history.
Despite outgaining Catawba 160-92 and holding the Indians to just 54 yards rushing, Marshall’s three turnovers and penalties allowed Catawba to pounce late in the fourth, leading to a score by fullback Lee Spears.
Despite being on the losing end, Marshall end Don Gibson was named game MVP after a stellar defensive performance.
