The third-annual Tangerine Bowl featured the game’s first tie between the Murray State Thoroughbreds and the Sul Ross Lobos, where the teams deadlocked 21-21.
Sul Ross pounced early with the help of halfback Ted Scown, who scored three touchdowns, a pass from quarterback Charles Laffoon, and two more on the ground. Murray State answered late in the first half with an 85-yard kickoff return from halfback Joe Bronson, the game’s first kickoff return in history, leading the Lobos to a 21-7 advantage heading into the half.
Murray State held Sul Ross to a scoreless second half and capitalized on a turnover in the fourth quarter, leading to a score from halfback Dale McDaniel to reduce Sul Ross’s lead to 21-14. Late in the fourth quarter, McDaniel rushed for 36 yards for the game’s tying score.
Scown was named MVP following his three-touchdown performance.
