For the 11th annual Tangerine Bowl, 11,000 fans were in attendance to witness West Texas State rally in the second half to take down Southern Miss 20-13.
The Buffaloes struggled early on as the Southerners pulled ahead 13-0 going into the half after a goal-line rush by quarterback Doug Barfield and a 51-yard scamper by halfback J.C. Arban. However, momentum shifted in West Texas State’s favor after a 75-yard pick-six from halfback and game MVP Ron Mills.
The Southerners were held scoreless the remainder of the game, but the Buffaloes attacked and rattled off two more scores, a two-yard rush by Mills and a 19-yard rush by quarterback Bubba Hillman, to complete the rally.
