Toledo cruised to its third-straight Tangerine Bowl win behind an efficient offense and a stifling defense.
The Rockets rushed for 206 yards and Chuck Ealey passed for 176 yards, while the defense held Richmond to just 138 yards of total offense, and only 24 passing. Richmond jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, but Toledo came back with a vengeance, scoring 14 second-quarter points on a fumble recovery in the end zone by defensive lineman Mel Long and a one-yard plunge by Joe Schwartz.
The Rockets limited the Spiders to just 51 total yards of offense in the second half. Toledo added two touchdowns in the fourth quarter as Ealey scored from one yard and Schwartz went over from three yards away.
Long and Ealey capped their brilliant Toledo careers by being named most valuable lineman and back of the game, respectively. It marked the second time in three years that Ealey earned the award.
