The 28th annual Tangerine Bowl marked the first time the game was played outside of Orlando and involved a Division I-A team. To accommodate a record crowd of 37,234 enthusiastic fans, the game was moved to Florida Field in Gainesville.
Miami entered the game with an 11-0 record and the nation’s top-ranked defense. Miami led 13-0 going into the fourth quarter, but the Gator offense never gave up. RB Nat Moore chipped away at the Redskin defense before scoring on a one-yard plunge to cut the margin to six.
Not content with a six-point lead, Miami continued to drive and ended the game with a 27-yard field goal by Dave Draudt. Draudt’s strong foot provided most of the scoring for the Redskins as he accounted for 10 of Miami’s 16 points.
