January 1, 1970
After agreeing to a sponsorship with the Florida Department of Citrus, the bowl changed its name to the Florida Citrus Bowl.
Despite a bowl record five field goals from Jess Atkinson, Maryland was not able to stop Tennessee’s Johnnie Jones, who ran for 154 yards and two touchdowns to earn MVP honors.
Highly-touted Maryland quarterback Boomer Esiason played only one quarter before suffering a separated shoulder.
DL Reggie White led the Vols’ defense as they held off a late run by the Terps to seal the 30-23 win.
