A game that ended in Georgia Tech’s favor over Nebraska 45-21, fans swarmed the field after the Yellow Jackets’ win, taking the Florida Citrus Bowl’s field goal posts back to Atlanta with them.
Game MVP and Yellow Jackets quarterback Shawn Jones aided Georgia Tech’s early-game explosion, throwing for two of the team’s first three touchdowns to go up 21-0 early in the second quarter. However, the Cornhuskers bounced back after making the switch at quarterback to Tom Hasse, whose two touchdowns put Nebraska within a possession. Heading into the half, a 37-yard field goal from Scott Sisson increased the Yellow Jackets’ lead to 24-14.
To open the half, Nebraska handled its first drive well, until a blocked field goal attempt set up another scoring drive for Georgia Tech with a one-yard run by Jones. Despite a strong defensive showing by the Cornhuskers with four sacks and forcing two fumbles, they were no match for Jones and the Yellow Jackets, who collected 467 yards of total offense.
