Cal’s high-powered offense, averaging 36 points per game, took the opening drive for a TD en route to a 37-13 victory over ACC Champion Clemson, breaking a string of five consecutive bowl wins for the Tigers.

The Golden Bears, playing their first New Year’s Day bowl since 1959, charged to a 17-3 first-quarter lead following a 72-yard punt return by wide receiver Brian Treggs. Cal quarterback Mike Pawlawski, the game’s MVP, completed 21-of-31 passes, finishing with 230 passing yards and one TD. Tailback Russell White ran for 109 yards on 22 carries against a Clemson defense that came in allowing 53 rushing yards per game.
