January 1, 1994

Penn State’s defense held the high-scoring Tennessee offense to only one touchdown and kept the Vols off the scoreboard in the second half as the underdog Nittany Lions captured a resounding win before a crowd of 72,456.

With Heisman Trophy finalist Heath Shuler at the helm, the fifth-ranked Volunteers were out to a quick 10-0 lead and appeared to be on their way to matching their scoring average. But the Nittany Lions roared back and took a 17-13 lead into the half.

After gaining 144 yards on the ground in the first half, PSU held Tennessee to negative nine yards after the break. With the Nittany Lion defense holding Tennessee in check, Penn State extended its lead to 31-13 as quarterback Kerry Collins threw second-half touchdown passes to Kyle Brady and game MVP Bobby Engram.
