The 52nd annual Citrus Bowl was the highest-attended football game in the history of the stadium.
Nearly 73,000 fans witnessed the first-ever meeting of legendary coaches Steve Spurrier and Joe Paterno on New Year’s Day. The sixth-ranked Gators rolled over the 11th-ranked Nittany Lions 21-6 in a classic “smashmouth” game.
Gator senior running back Fred Taylor earned game MVP honors after setting Citrus Bowl and school bowl records with 234 yards rushing on 43 carries, then the second-best rushing performance ever by a Gator back. The Nittany Lions, missing their top offensive weapons in running back Curtis Enis and receiver Joe Jurevicius, could only muster two Travis Forney field goals against the stingy Gator defense.
