Michigan State and Florida played a game for the ages in the 54th annual Citrus Bowl.
Paul Edinger coolly kicked a 39-yard field goal as time expired as the Spartans defeated Steve Spurrier’s Gators, 37-34. The crowd of 62,011 was treated to an edge-of-your-seat thriller filled with intensity from the opening kickoff.
The game etched itself into the books with record-setting performances by players from both squads. Spartan wide receiver Plaxico Burress, the game’s MVP, hauled in 13 passes for 185 yards and three touchdowns – all Michigan State bowl records and his touchdown grabs tied a bowl record, which was set by Ohio’s Todd Snyder in 1968. Burress’ 185 receiving yards placed him third on the all-time yardage list in bowl history.
Florida’s Travis Taylor caught 11 passes for 156 yards and three TDs. Quarterbacks Bill Burke of Michigan State and Doug Johnson of Florida threw three touchdowns each – the first time in bowl history that both team quarterbacks had thrown for three TDs, and the first time two players caught three passes for scores.
