January 1, 1958
Mississippi Southern returned to the Tangerine Bowl for the second consecutive year, but its luck didn’t change.
East Texas State, making its third appearance in the bowl, scored a late field goal from Neal Hinson to propel the Lions to a 10-9 win. The Southerners sacked the Lions’ QB in the end zone for the first safety in bowl history as they took a 9-7 lead into the fourth quarter, but Hinson’s 31-yard field goal lifted the Lions to victory.
It was Hinson’s only field goal of the season.
