SEC & Big Ten Week 2 Roundup: LSU makes statement win, Michigan escapes at home

Led by quarterback Joe Burrow, No. 6 LSU defeated No. 9 Texas in a 45-38 shootout at Darrell K Royal–Texas Memorial Stadium on Saturday.

Burrow finished the game with 471 passing yards – the second-most in LSU history behind Rohan Davey’s 528 against Alabama in 2001 – and also tossed four touchdowns, including for a 61-yarder to Justin Jefferson with 2:27 left in the fourth quarter to put the game away.

Overall, LSU had three players with at least 100 yards receiving in the game, marking the first time in program history the Tigers have accomplished the feat. In addition to Jefferson, who finished with nine catches for 163 yards and three touchdowns, Ja’Marr Chase added eight catches for 147 yards, while Terrace Marshall, Jr. had six catches for 123 yards and a score.

Over in the Big Ten, No. 7 Michigan survived a scare against Army in the first meeting between the programs since 1962, escaping with a 24-20 double-overtime win against the Black Knights in front of 111,474 fans in Ann Arbor.

The Black Knights entered the game riding a 10-game win streak – the second-longest streak in the nation at the time – and seemed poised to pull a stunner when quarterback Kelvin Hopkins ran for a go-ahead, 6-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter. But Michigan was able to force overtime thanks to Zach Charbonnet’s third rushing TD of the game (and also of his career).

After the teams swapped touchdowns in the first overtime, kicker Jake Moody put the Wolverines up with a 43-yard field goal to start the second OT.  Three plays later, the Wolverines defense forced and recovered a fumble to seal the win.

Now let’s check out a few more highlights from an exciting Week 2 in the SEC and Big Ten:

• 1 Clemson defeated No. 12 Texas A&M, 24-10 in an SEC-ACC clash, extending their FBS-leading winning streak to 17 consecutive games.
• Maryland defeated No. 21 Syracuse 63-20. In two games under new head coach Michael Locksley, the Terps have scored 142 total points.
• Jonathan Taylor rushed for three touchdowns and caught another as No. 17 Wisconsin cruised past Central Michigan 61-0 in its home opener Saturday.
• Ole Miss, Mizzou and South Carolina bounced back from Week 1 losses and cruised to wins in their home openers against Arkansas, West Virginia and Charleston Southern, respectively.
• Tennessee fell at home to BYU in double OT, 29-26. The Vols are off to an 0-2 start to their season — the worst start to a season for the program since 1988.
• Colorado defeated No. 25 Nebraska 34-31 in double OT to hand the Huskers their first loss of the season.
