Week 6 Big Ten & SEC Recap

#18 Michigan 38, #13 Northwestern 0

The Wolverines (5-1, 2-0 Big Ten) upset the Wildcats (5-1, 1-1 Big Ten) in Ann Arbor, scoring on offense, defense, and special teams. Senior Jehu Chesson opened the game up Michigan with a 96-yard kick return for a touchdown. Prior to Saturday, Northwestern was giving up a nation-low seven points per game. QB Clayton Thorson was 13-of-27 for 106 yards for the Wildcats, and Justin Jackson was held to only 25 rushing yards after averaging 127 yards through his first five games. The Wolverines’ junior CB Jourdan Lewis returned a Thorson interception 37 yards for a score. It was Michigan’s third shutout win in a row – their first such streak since 1980.

 

Tennessee 38, #19 Georgia 31

The Volunteers (3-3, 1-2 SEC) erased a 21-point deficit and defeated the Bulldogs (4-2, 2-2 SEC) in Knoxville. Vols QB Joshua Dobbs threw for a career-high 312 yards and three TDs through the air, and tacked on 118 yards and two more scores on the ground. Georgia suffered a blow after losing star RB Nick Chubb to a knee injury the first play of the game, breaking his 13-game streak of 100-yard performances. The Bulldogs’ run game was instead led by sophomore Sony Michel, who rushed for a career-high 145 yards.

 

Wisconsin 23, Nebraska 21

The Badgers (4-2, 1-1 Big Ten) defeated Cornhuskers (2-4, 0-2 Big Ten), after Wisconsin K Rafael Gaglianone made a 46-yard field goal with four seconds to play. The Badgers played a turnover-free game with QB Joel Stave going for 322 yards and one touchdown. Junior RB Dare Ogunbowale rushed for 117 yards after strting running back Taiwan Deal left the game with an ankle injury. Huskers QB Tommy Armstrong Jr. went 11-for-28 for 129 yards and one touchdown.

 

#8 Alabama 27, Arkansas 14

The Crimson Tide (5-1, 2-1 SEC) delivered the victory in Tuscaloosa this weekend against the Razorbacks (2-4, 1-2 SEC). After trailing at halftime, the Tide scored 24 points in just 17 minutes of the contest. The Bama defense held sophomore RB Alex Collins to 26 rushing yards, as well as adding on four sacks and an interception. The Arkansas defense picked off QB Jake Coker twice, but Coker finished with 262 yards and two scores.

 

#11 Florida 21, Missouri 3

The Gators (6-0, 4-0 SEC) upended the Tigers (4-2, 1-2 SEC) at Faurot Field Saturday. For the second week in a row, a stout Florida defense has not allowed a touchdown and still leads the SEC in sacks this season, adding three more against QB Drew Lock and the Mizzou offense. Lock made his second start in place of Maty Mauk and completed 16 of 39 passes for 151 yards.

 

#22 Iowa 29, Illinois 20

The Hawkeyes (6-0, 2-0 Big Ten) remain undefeated after topping the Fighting Illini (4-2, 1-1 Big Ten). Iowa RB Jodran Canzeri rushed for 256 yards and one score on a school-record 43 carries. Hawkeye QB C.J. Beathard had 200 passing yards and two touchdowns with WR Jerminic Smith going four for 118 yards. Illinois QB West Lunt was 25 of 42 for 317 yards and one score.

 

Penn State 29, Indiana 7

The Nittany Lions (5-1, 2-0 Big Ten) are still unbeaten in conference play after topping the Hoosiers (4-2, 0-2 Big Ten) at Beaver Stadium. Penn State QB Christian Hackenberg threw for 262 yards and two scores while adding two more on the ground. Two Indiana QBs took snaps, combining for 155 yards, with QB Zander Diamont rushing for the team’s only score.

#1 Ohio State (6-0, 2-0 Big Ten) defeated Maryland (2-4, 0-2 Big Ten), 49-28.

#7 LSU (5-0, 3-0 SEC) defeated South Carolina (2-4, 0-4 SEC), 45-24

#4 Michigan State (6-0, 2-0 Big Ten) defeated Rutgers (2-3, 0-2 Big Ten), 31-24.

Minnesota (4-2, 1-1 Big Ten) defeated Purdue (1-5, 0-2 Big Ten), 41-13.

#14 Ole Miss (5-1, 2-1 SEC) defeated New Mexico State, 52-3.

Mississippi State (4-2, 1-2 SEC) defeated Troy, 45-17.
