Mike Davis Eager To Compete Against Wisconsin’s Feature Backs

Capital One Bowl fans will be treated to a duel of elite rushing attacks on Wednesday afternoon. Though the Big Ten has the reputation for power runners – with Wisconsin’s Melvin Gordon and James White as prime examples – South Carolina sophomore Mike Davis will have a chance to demonstrate the SEC’s ground skills.

At 5’9’’, 215 pounds, Mike Davis has become a huge asset to South Carolina’s running game, finishing fourth in the SEC with 103 yards per game on the ground. His name is already being mentioned as a possible contender for the 2014 Heisman Trophy.

“I just come to every game, making an effort, hoping to have a big game, basically coming in just to help our team,” Davis.

Davis is motivated to be matching up against a pair of 1000-yard rushers in Gordon and White, and has used the extra time off to recover from some nagging injuries that hobbled him late in the year.

“He’s pretty close ,” said running backs coach Everette Sands. “He’s had really good days at practice since he’s been here, and I’m looking for him to be close to full strength and do some things to get back to the old Mike Davis.”

Both Sands and offensive line coach Shawn Elliott were looking forward to the matchup with a stout Badgers defense

“(Wisconsin) is a great football team,” said Elliott. “We’re going to have to run the football and do it well.”

With Davis back in the backfield, the Gamecocks will look to show off their own power rushing attack on a national showcase.
