What Is This?
The official (oooooh) blog of Florida Citrus Sports, specifically the Team Selection Committee and everything that goes into creating Orlando Bowl Week.
What Is Orlando Bowl Week?
Between December 26 and January 2, Orlando will host four elite teams from BCS conferences. The #2 team from the Big East (or Notre Dame) against the #3 team from the ACC on December 29 in the Champs Sports Bowl. Four days later, the #2 teams from the Big Ten and SEC meet in the Capital One Bowl. Florida Citrus Sports and Central Florida have a variety of events surrounding both games to make it a dream vacation for any college football fan. We started calling Orlando “the best bowl trip in America” back in the 1950s and now Orlando Bowl Week is making that truer than ever.
What Is Florida Citrus Sports?
A not-for-profit membership organization based in downtown Orlando. From our humble beginnings through the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks 1079 and later the Tangerine Sports Association, Florida Citrus Sports has been dedicated to putting on world-class events and using the proceeds to benefit children’s charities in the Central Florida area.
Who Are You?
Your regular author is Assistant Director of Marketing Communications/Digital Media Matt Repchak (sorry for the long title), but other staff members and leaders within the organization may pop up from time to time.
Where Does The Name Of The Blog Come From?
Mostly it comes from not wanting to call it “the official Florida Citrus Sports blog” or something like that. But it comes from some promotional materials from the 1949 game between Sul Ross State and Murray State. Here’s a little more info.
What’s The Deal With That Field?
In 2009-10, a bad combination of cold and rainy weather ruined an attempt at resodding the field of the Florida Citrus Bowl Stadium, resulting in some pretty awful field conditions for the 2009 Champs Sports Bowl and especially the 2010 Capital One Bowl. Immediately after the season, FCSports teamed up with the City of Orlando (who owns the Citrus Bowl and maintains its field) to install a new state-of-the-art AstroTurf GameDay Grass playing surface, ensuring that such a landscaping horror show would never happen again.

How Come You Keep Feeding Me That Line About ‘Most Deserving’ And Whatnot?
There are over 200 members of our selection committee and all of them go on the road at least one weekend a year to visit one of our partner schools. At the end of the season, the entire committee evaluates all available teams based on a list of criteria that includes records, head-to-head wins, fan excitement and more. We can’t even begin to tell you how all 200 member think, but we can promise you that if a team is on our board, they are getting an honest look. Our track record in selection backs that up.
