Week 3 SEC & Big Ten Recap: Florida Gets to 4-0; Michigan Shuts Out Cougars
Members of the Florida Citrus Sports Team Selection Committee traveled throughout SEC and Big Ten country this weekend, meeting with fans across both conferences in preparation of the 70th annual Buffalo Wild Wings Citrus Bowl. The SEC came out strong, going undefeated in non-conference play, while the Big Ten went 12-2 this weekend.
Florida 28, Tennessee 27
In an improbable come-from-behind win, the Gators (4-0, 2-0 SEC) defeated the Volunteers (2-2, 0-1 SEC) to continue their 11-year win streak. With time running out, Florida was down to their last play when freshman WR Antonio Callaway turned a fourth-and-14 catch into a 63-yard touchdown reception. Tennessee QB Josh Dobbs led the team in passing, rushing, and receiving, but a missed field goal at the end of the game would leave the Gators with their eleventh-straight win over the Vols. Florida’s offense totaled 392 yards and improved to 10-for-10 on fourth-down conversions.
Michigan 31, #22 BYU 0
For the first time in nearly three years, the Wolverines (3-1, 0-0 Big Ten) delivered a victory by way of shutout, this time over the Cougars (2-2). Michigan QB Jake Rudock (14/25) had 194 yards and one touchdown through the air and 33 yards and two scores on the ground. Michigan’s rushing attack was led by De’Veon Smith, who took six carries for 125 yards and one touchdown.
#14 Texas A&M 28, Arkansas 21 (OT)
The Aggies (4-0, 1-0 SEC) defeated the Razorbacks (1-3, 0-1 SEC) in overtime at AT&T Stadium. A&M QB Kyle Allen threw for 358 yards and two touchdowns, both to Christian Kirk who took eight receptions for 173 yards. Arkansas QB Brandon Allen went 20-of-25 for 225 yards and one score.
Mississippi State 17, Auburn 9
The Bulldogs (3-1, 1-1 SEC) prevailed over the Tigers (2-2, 0-2 SEC) in a defensive battle. QB Dak Prescott threw for 270 yards and two touchdowns, but the Auburn defense held the Bulldogs’ ground game to just 56 yards. The Tigers offense combined for 389 yards, but couldn’t punch the ball into the end zone as the Mississippi State defense came up with four defensive stops in the red zone.
